Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries.I also apply this technique for people who suffer with chronic conditions as a result of surgery or when in recovery, because the stimulation supports to send blood flow to the weaker areas where it will act as a support in stimulating the self healing process of the body.

My technique involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of the muscles and connective tissue cells.

This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. It may also promote faster healing by increasing the blood flow and reducing inflammation.

A 2014 study, involving 59 participants found that deep tissue massage helped to reduce pain in people with a chronic low back. The healing effects were compared with anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen(Advil).

Are there any side effects?

It is not unusual to have some lingering soreness for a few days following a deep tissue massage. Using a cold pack wrapped in a towel may help to relieve the soreness.

Massage therapy is generally safe, but there are some issues that need to be assessed before being massaged.

Warning – If you are suffering from varicose veins, or have a history of blood clots or clotting disorder; or take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or cancer, you need to speak to your doctor before booking a massage.

What Happens During The Massage?

Before your deep tissue massage, your massage therapist will want to know about your problem areas. A deep tissue massage can involve your entire body or just one area.

Once ready, you will be asked to lie on your back or stomach, under a sheet or towel.

The area being worked on will need to be exposed. The massage therapist will begin with warming up your muscles using a lighter touch. Once you are warmed up, they will start working on your areas. They will use deep kneading and stroking with varying amounts of intense pressure.

What Are The Benefits Of Deep Tissue Massage?

Massage is widely accepted as both a tool for relaxation and stress relief and also to alleviate pain, treat arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, depression among other conditions.

Deep tissue massage is one advanced massage technique to address certain issues. Deep tissue massages have benefits for both your physical and mental health.

Any massage will have numerous benefits for the receiver, making them an easy way to relax and treat your medical issues.

Stress relief

Deep tissue massage is a great stress reliever. Whether you are experiencing stress at home or suffer with discomfort as a result of stiffness in muscles and joints related to work, getting a massage is amazing to unwind and relax for an extended period of time and allow someone to relieve your discomfort.

A massage can help lower Cortisol levels (stress hormone) and increase levels of oxytocin, which is a hormone that relaxes the body and nervous system.
It can also help with physical symptoms of stress, such as tight muscles and shoulders and tension headaches. A deep tissue massage can address these issues and help you relax.

Reduce Pain

There are a number of conditions that deep tissue massage can treat.

Chronic pain in the lower back , upper back, middle of the back, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia and stiff necks can all be treated with this massage technique.

Any muscle tension that usually appears when we suffer with chronic pain can also be lessened with deep tissue massage, as it can loosen the tight tissue clusters causing pain.

Breaks up scar tissue and makes movement easier

In areas where people have scar tissue, they often report chronic pain or stiffness.

Getting regular deep tissue massages can help break up this scar tissue by improving lymphatic circulation and drainage to improve flexibility and range of motion in the area of the scar tissue.

Reduces arthritis symptoms

Deep tissue massage can be used to treat many different symptoms like arthritis, stiffness, limited range of motion in joints, and knees or ankles, wrists.
It also supports the promotion of better sleeping cycles.

Rehabilitation of injured Muscles

Deep tissue massage can help stretch tight or twisted muscles and can also facilitate the movement of toxins from your muscles.

Deep tissue massage therapy is used frequently to treat sports related injuries. Many athletes are incorporating deep tissue massage into their recovery protocols as they can help to speed up the recovery and repair of the muscle cell memory post training.

Lowers Blood Pressure and Heart Rate

Deep tissue massage reduces stress and tension, which impacts blood pressure. Massage has positive impacts on systolic, diastolic and arterial blood pressure.

The massage can also increase production of serotonin, which promotes good feelings and happiness. Happy hormones are a terrific remedy and support the self healing abilities of the body and in turn speeds up the recovery.

A Few Words from our Clients

I suffer with a chronic low back pain and neck pain as a result of working at my desk in a seated position. Since my deep tissue massage, I have regained much more flexibility and no longer suffer with headaches. Britta also gave me various exercises and stretches to do on a daily basis which has helped tremendously. Highly recommended.

The Bottom Line

Deep tissue massage is best suited for people who engage in highly physical activities, such as running or those who have an injury or chronic pain. If you have a low pain threshold or are looking for relief of tense muscles, Swedish massage is gentler and maybe a better option. Swedish Massage does not offer the same healing results as the deep massage, so I suggest giving each a try and then decide which suits you best.
